About me

Three decades of corporate tax, now working for you.

I am a licensed Texas attorney who spent nearly three decades advising Fortune 500 companies on corporate tax compliance, strategic planning including acquisitions and divestments, and IRS audits and litigation.

Most preparers learn the forms. I learned the law. Whether your situation involves a job change, an inheritance, rental income, a stock option exercise, or a letter from the IRS, that distinction is what protects you.

I founded Tax Life Simplified to offer something rare: attorney-level expertise for individuals, with direct personal service and transparent pricing. Throughout my corporate tax career, I provided personal tax guidance to my friends and family, long before this practice existed. When I retired from corporate tax in late 2025, formalizing that work was the natural next step. With Tax Life Simplified, you work with me directly, every time.

Why this matters for your return

  • As a licensed attorney, I am authorized to represent you directly before the IRS in audits, payment and collection issues, appeals, and correspondence.
  • Deep knowledge of tax law means I do not simply complete forms, I identify planning opportunities others miss.
  • Corporate tax background means I understand complex income: equity compensation, investment portfolios, and business ownership.
  • Small practice means you always work with me directly, not a junior staff member or seasonal hire.
  • Year-round availability for questions, life changes, and estimated tax planning, not just April.

FAQ

What to know before reaching out.

These are the questions I hear most often from clients.

Tax software is designed for straightforward situations, it asks the questions it was programmed to ask, but it cannot ask the ones it does not know to ask. If you have investment income, self-employment, a job change, a divorce, an inheritance, or rental property, software will often miss deductions and credits it was never built to find.

At Tax Life Simplified, you are working with a licensed Texas attorney who holds a Master's degree in Accounting, spent over five years as an IRS audit manager for large corporations, and has more than two decades of tax strategy experience. The result is not just a completed form, it is a return optimized for your situation, with a licensed professional available if the IRS ever has questions.

Most tax preparers learn the forms. I learned the law. I hold a law degree, a Master's degree in Accounting, and spent 6 years as an IRS audit manager for Fortune 500 companies, which taught me exactly how the IRS evaluates returns.

I have spent over two decades handling the most complex tax situations at the corporate level: multi-jurisdiction audits, acquisitions, divestitures, and direct IRS representation. For individuals, that level of complexity rarely comes up. What it means for you is that nothing in your personal return will be unfamiliar territory, and if the IRS ever contacts you, you have a licensed attorney, not a seasonal hire, in your corner.

Every client should bring: a valid photo ID, Social Security numbers for yourself and any dependents, your prior year tax return, and bank account information for direct deposit of any refund.

For income, provide all W-2s and 1099s (interest, dividends, retirement distributions, Social Security), brokerage statements showing investment sales, and any K-1s from partnerships or trusts.

For deductions, bring mortgage interest statements (Form 1098), property tax records, charitable contribution receipts, and significant medical expense records.

Self-employed clients should also bring: business income records and any 1099-NEC forms received, all business expense documentation, home office measurements and utility costs if applicable, vehicle mileage logs, health insurance premiums paid, and records of any retirement contributions. I send every new client a personalized checklist after the initial consultation, so nothing falls through the cracks.

If you are self-employed, a freelancer, or earn income not subject to employer withholding, you are generally required to pay estimated taxes four times a year. The IRS expects you to pay as you earn, not all at once in April. Missing or underpaying these installments results in underpayment penalties even if you pay your full balance when you file.

The quarterly due dates are typically April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15. Calculating the right amount requires knowing your projected income, allowable deductions, and applicable tax rates for the year, which changes if your business has a strong quarter or you have a significant life event. This is one of the clearest areas where year-round guidance from a tax professional pays for itself.

Do not ignore it, but there is no reason to panic. IRS notices cover a wide range of situations, from a simple math correction or a request to verify income to a formal audit notification. The notice number printed in the upper right corner tells you exactly what the IRS is asking for.

As a licensed Texas attorney with extensive IRS-related experience, I can read the notice, explain what it actually means, determine the appropriate response, and communicate with the IRS on your behalf.

Both options are fully supported. Many clients prefer to work remotely, you upload your documents securely through my client portal, I prepare your return, walk you through it on a call, and e-file on your behalf without you ever leaving home. In-person appointments in Houston are also available for those who prefer to meet face to face.

Either way, the level of attention and review you receive is identical. I remain available by phone and email throughout the process and after filing, not just during tax season.

April is when taxes are filed. The decisions that determine what you owe are made throughout the year, and by April, most of those decisions are already locked in. Waiting until tax season means many of your best options have already closed.

Year-round planning allows me to manage quarterly estimated payments to avoid penalties, maximize contributions to tax-advantaged retirement accounts before year-end, and plan around major life events (a job change, a home purchase, a marriage, a new child). For self-employed clients especially, this kind of ongoing relationship is where the most meaningful savings come from.
